[ Worship and Religion ]
During Qing Dynasty, Taiwan was a new paradise to most
residents in southeastern costal area of China where the
soared population had made living difficult. Immgration to
Taiwan was the best way to improve living. However, The
1st. step was no funny to cross the dangerous Black Water;
Taiwan Straits. What supported them were their beautiful
dreaming and the power of religion that can heal their pain
and fear. They brought their religious idols of God or
Goddess with them, crossed Taiwan Straits, and
settled down on this land of paradise..
[ Temples ]
The most popular religions in Dadaocheng are Buddhism
and Daoism. Buddhists benevolently endowed money and
built Temples. There are 3 famous Temples in Dadaocheng
in worship of Hsiahai City God, Heavenly Mother Ma-Zu,
and Zhang-Far-Tsu.
The appearance of the Temples reflects many profound
skills of traditional Chinese architecture combining painting,
designing, sculpting, and construction. They are realias for
studying the architecture of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
[ Church ]
In 1858 ( the 8th. year of Xien Feng), Qing Government
signed the Treaty of Tienjin which allowed more ports
open to international trading. This also encouraged the
western missioners to Chinese territory. In 1869 ( the
8th. year of Tong Zhi ), a Spanish missioner named
Kwo Teh-Kang came to Pingtong; a small town in
southern Taiwan. He then built the Wanking Catholic
Church followed by other Christian missioners came
in 1870s.
The most known persons of Christian missioners were
Maxwell in soutern Taiwan and McKay in northern Taiwan.
In Dadaocheng the Lee Tsun-Sheng Memorial Church
was built in 1937 by Lee's Family to commemorate
Lee Tsun-Sheng; the great "Father of Taiwan Tea";
also a reverent Christian. The Church is well conserved
till nowadays and Bible Study Fellowship still goes on
every week.
